| Florence had been developing as a major economic power in the 13th and 14th centuries. All this wealth fertilized the cultural soil: it became the birthplace of the Renaissance. It had been about a thousand years since Rome fell ‹ a thousand years of medieval culture, or lack thereof ‹ when the Renaissance took hold in roughly 1400. |
