| We stopped for iced cappuccinos on the terrace at the Uffizi, with a view of the campanile and Duomo. Because of the heat which only intensified as the week went on, we continued to search for iced cappuccino throughout Italy. This foreign concept was usually greeted with shock if not outright scorn. However, our request usually elicited a cup of cappuccino and a side order ‹ in the form of drinking glass or bowl ‹ of ice cubes. In other words, no Italian sullied the national character by actually putting ice in a perfectly good cup of cappuccino, but they did not prevent crazy Americans from committing this sacrilege. |
